How Did Zheng He Impact On China

Zheng He was an army captain in China between 1405 and 1433. Through that time he made seven trips with the biggest naval fleet known to mankind up until WWI with over 30,000 people on his voyages. These voyages that were made had more than one purpose for China. The main ones were showing their power and also gaining tribute from other countries. Not only did Zheng He finish the main purpose of his voyages, he also completed many different missions such as catching a pirate and bringing a giraffe to China which they haven’t seen before. Having a strong military is what every country desires to have. If you have a strong and powerful military, you are able take land, defend land, live in peace, or attack when needed. Reporter Caroline Hsu wrote, “China was a lone superpower at the time, with the military force to crush almost any opposition.” The military was so strong at the time that they were able to be thought of 500 years later as the lone superpower of that time. This allowed them to go out and get almost anything that they desired as they could destroy any kind of military that stands in their way. The way Zheng He shaped his military opened up the door for them to put fear in others or take over if they wanted. With all of this fear that they could put into others, it lowers the chances of being attacked. Zheng He didn’t just run the greatest naval fleet of the time, he also helped run foreign embassies while having his leadership role in the military. Norman Kutcher from Syracuse University wrote, “Placing Zheng He on a continuum that began with foreign embassies and continued with leadership in the military.” Showing that Zheng He didn’t only participate in the military, he was also involved in diplomacy. This is very important as it shows how much he was able to get done and how much he was actually working.
