Its April of 1861, first month of the Civil War, Alfred M. Green is delivering a speech in Philadelphia in order to persuade African Americans to join the Union army. At the time African Americans were not allowed to join, but Green felt as if they should and be preparing to enlist. In his speech Green uses a variety of ways to change his audience view on the war by explaining to them by helping in the war they will be fighting for there freedom. In Greens first part of his speech (Lines 1-8), he says it’s time for them to once again rise and demonstrate their bravery and patriotism towards the country that burns in their hearts, the country of freedom, and of civil religious toleration. Here Green wants them to feel as if they are needed in a time of need. That there needed for something more than just slave work. He calls them brave and patriotic so that for those that feel any doubt feel better about themselves. Green mentions that “it's time for them to once again rise to the challenge” saying as their ancestors did, they must to do the same. With this Green lets them know that they were underappreciated and this riots them up. He does this to prepare them for the next part of his speech, but before that he continues to build up his credibility by providing examples of ways they are treated. He tells them about how there being treated for there act of helping the war. The whites gave them fugitive-slave laws, dred Scott decisions, and months of imprisonment for helping them out. Green wants the crowd of African Americans to get frustrated with the whites for putting them in the conditions their in now and wants them to realize they don't deserve what's happening to
