How Does Amir Make Mistakes In The Kite Runner

In the Kite Runner, Amir makes mistakes throughout the book, which drives the question of if Amir redeemed himself later in the book. Amir doesn’t earn the redemption he seeks by the end of the novel. In order to want to earn redemption, you must feel as though you have made mistakes. There were many things that made Amir guilty. The first reason happened when Amir was flying his kite in a tournament and after he won, Hassan offered and went to go get his kite for him. He said, “For you, a thousand times over” (Hosseini, 2003, p.2). This shows how Hassan is honored to be Amir’s friend. “Do you want to help me fly this? I said. Do you want to try? I asked. Watch, Sobrab. I’m going to show you one of your father’s favorite tricks, the old lift-and-dive. Then, just like that, the green kite was spinning and wheeling out of control. Behind us, people cheered. Do you want me to run that kite for you? I thought I saw a nod. For you, a thousand times over” (Hosseini, 2003, p. 371). Amir finally feels that he has earned redemption from his mistake. Redemption is a difficult to achieve, and it can only be gained by learning from your mistake and changing. When Amir made his mistake, he didn’t learn from it. His problem was being scared of confrontation. After Amir did what he did, instead of changing, he did the opposite. Amir became even more scared, and spent years ignoring Hassan, and he dismissed the issue. Amir never changed for Hassan, and everyday was another chance for him. Once Hassan died, Amir seemed to care a lot more all of the sudden. Amir never wanted to solve the problem directly. He just wanted to stop feeling guilty. So he reluctantly went to Kabul for Sohrab. If Amir had a son in danger, Hassan would help immediately, because they are friends and not for any other reason.
