African Americans have struggled for equal rights throughout history from slavery to the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr was the leader of the African American Civil Rights movement to conclude racism. However, after the movement African Americans still experience discrimination even though they are to be seen as equal individuals by the law. The Crucible by Arthur Miller demonstrates discrimination through the main character Abigail Williams accusing innocent townspeople in Salem of witchcraft. While The Crucible portrays discrimination of human nature, the issue of black lives matter in modern society illustrates we are still faced with this discrimination through work, laws, and in everyday life.

Those who are accused of witchcraft are symbolized as African Americans affected by the society. For instance, Abigail accuses Tituba, the slave of Reverend Parris from Barbados of witchcraft because of her low status. Those in the room during the accusation came to the conclusion very quickly that Tituba was a witch only because she was a slave. Abigail denies making contact with the Devil when Reverend Hale suspects her involvement in witchcraft, “I never called him! Tituba, Tituba...She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer!...she comes to me while I sleep” (Miller 1.880). Abigail saw herself being exposed to witchcraft so she took that opportunity to blame Tituba. Abigail was aware if she framed Tituba nobody would take Tituba’s word because she was a slave. John Proctor is the tragic hero who holds a high status in the town but does not get involved in the trails until his wife Elizabeth Proctor and Rebecca Nurse are arrested for the use of witchcraft. Rasiciam has been shown by employers in many ways towards the employers of different race. According to Blitz Ronn, “black employees also historically received lower scores on their evaluations.” Employers take the time to study their employees work habits and how they impact the company however, African Americans are not always stood out. Employers will not look further into their work because of their race causing a negative or lower evaluation compared to other co workers. Morefore, Ernie Colbert claims to have worked at CNN TBS for 19 years yet has only been promoted twice and was still paid less than his white coworkers (Blitz Ronn). Even though, Ernie Colbert held a high position he still experienced discrimination which was shown in his paycheck. Colbort’s time and dedication to TBS was irrelevant to the employers considering the fact he was not paid the same amount as the white co workers. Furthermore, African Americans incomes on a average have been low and are usually one of the first group of people to be fired first and hired last.
