In the movie, The Dark Knight, directed by Christopher Nolan, film techniques are creatively used to portray Batman, the protagonist, as a superhero with good character and judgement.
Throughout the film, Nolan has ensured that Batman is mostly shot from low angles. The purpose of these low angles is to portray Batman as much more superior than any other mortal being. These angles can also be seen as a reflection of Batman’s altruistic nature, because he is willing to do whatever it takes to fight evil, even if it means endangering his own life. However the low angles do not only portray him as superior, they also make the viewer aware of his vulnerability.
An example of this in the film would be during Batman’s interrogation of The Joker. During this scene The Joker is shot from high angles, whereas Batman is shot from low angles, implying that he holds power over The Joker. But this situation becomes ironic because at this point in the film, The Joker is the one who holds power over Batman, hence we get the idea that Batman also has his own shortcomings just as we, humans, do. It is also during this scene that we are made even more aware of the bright lighting used whenever Batman appears on the screen, and how it strongly contrasts with the lighting used on The Joker. In some shots Batman's face has both, bright lighting and dark lighting, on it. This can be symbolic of Batman's imperfection as a superhero.
