The topic of my essay is how Big Brother affects Winston's character by making him love Big Brother and push himself aside. His fatalistic streak contributed to his downfall because of all the laws he broke over and over. Winston's character changes throughout the story in significant ways. Winston's view of himself and Big Brother changes throughout the book. As the author mentions, Winston “had dropped his habit of drinking gin at all hours.” This conveys he lost the need for it after meeting Julia and she had replaced his habit. In the book, the author says that Winston was caught and tortured to thinking 2 + 2 = 5 saying “But they could get inside you.” This supports my topic because Winston and Julia talked and Julia had told him the party could get them but not get inside, but he now gets that they could. Winston had also turned his torture to Julia saying “‘Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don’t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!’” This illustrates that Winston did love Julia, but he changed his mind right then and there. Winston was caught up by his streak of breaking the laws and needing to be more careful demonstrating his change of obeying the laws. The author writes “he had suddenly decided to come home and begin the diary today.” This conveys that he has a development of character to break the law. The author also says “His heart had leaped. It’s started! he had thought. A riot!” This suggests that he wants to fight against the party when at the start he was contemptuous of the party. He didn’t care much about the party or said anything about it until he went into that shop and bought that
