What was most important to you about what you read? The most important part about what I read was the fact that the society Winston lives in is like our own. The conditions of the society are described in the first chapter and the narrator says, “There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment . . . They could plug into your wire whenever they wanted to.” This description reminded me of the fact that the United States government can hack into any device or camera they want to, and we will never know. They monitor us like the Party monitors Winston and his fellow citizens. In my opinion, this similarity in the two societies is unnerving and a horrifying thought to occupy because we may be living in the early stages or current dystopia. How did the characters or issues change over time? The main character, Winston, changed with the issues at hand. Throughout the beginning and middle of the book, Winston was set apart from everyone else; he had a rebellious soul. Rather than conforming and thinking like the majority, he felt the need to communicate with the future about the world’s current state. His diary was his first major act of rebellion.
