In the play, Othello, written by William Shakespeare, Venetian women describes as an ‘objects' to sell; they have to obey their owner and have no ability to stand up for themselves. For example, although Desdemona is loyals to her husband, she is still being called a ‘whore' by the one she loves the most. Firstly, culture-conditioning plays a big role on how Desdemona has to obey Othello. Secondly, women have to face to double-standard given from their gentlemen, which makes Desdemona obey Othello without hesitation. Lastly, as a wife of the general and the daughter of a Venetian Senator, Desdemona’s position is different compared to other ladies. To begin with, culture-conditioning has a profound impact on Desdemona’s idealism. For example, women have to stay at home, virginity uses to judge other personality, and religion is a rule to measure human dignity. In order to be a happy woman, Desdemona makes a decision to follow the rules just as her mother does to her father. For example, Venetian women have to deal with gender-inequality, which they have to stay at home before and even after they marry. According to Roderigo’s dialogue after Iago and Roderigo wake Brabantio up, he says to Brabantio “[if] she be in her chamber or your house,/ Let loose on me the justice of the state” (Shakespeare I.I.147-148). Desdemona can not enjoy her liberty that women in upper classes do today, it was against the rule in that society for women to leave the house without permission from the men. During that century, woman in upper classes must stay at home and be responsible for maintaining the honour of their husband and family. Furthermore, once Desdemona is married, she has more rules to follow. She especially needs to be dutiful to her husband and reliable to him. If the woman was accused of an ‘adultery’, they would be against their husband. Othello
