In the workplace, relationships, and families, everyone sometimes struggle with communicating with those around them. Most people are willing to lie to make sure they don’t hurt loved ones or even make the boss at work mad. Communication is vital even when a mistake needs to be admitted. Without communication, relationships tend to crumble, as shown in Othello of those who act on others word without obtaining concrete evidence tend to act more irrationally.

In Othello, many characters were flawed when it came to communicating. They would hide truths, not tell the full truth, and even listen and trust the first thing they hear. Towards the end, fear becomes a very common emotion that runs through the characters. Othello becomes different and starts to make comments about his love for Desdemona. He says that when his love for Desdemona runs out the only thing that will follow will be chaos (III. iii. 101-102). This is a weird comment to make and this is about his wife, his love should never run out for her. It is comments like these that causes the fear in the people on the other side of the relationship. Desdemona starts to recognize behavioral changes in Othello and she is willing to do anything to save their relationship. Desdemona dropped and lost her handkerchief that Othello gave her as his first gift for her. Othello asks to see it and Desdemona responds “It is not lost, but what an if it were?” (III. iv. 96). First she lies about losing it and she asks what punishment she would receive for losing it. She doesn’t come out and say she lost it which is a problem in the future but also she should not ask what punishment she would receive if she was worried about it.
