How Does Edgar Allan Poe Create Suspense

Imagine wanting to kill someone because of how their eye looks. You wouldn’t imagine that would you? The main character in “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe did. In the story, the crazy main character wanted to kill an old man because, he didn’t like that the way “The pale blue eye” (Poe 89) looked on him. So he had this thrilling plan to kill him, sneak into his room, and steal his “pale blue eye” (Poe 89) from him. Suspense is the sense of growing tension, fear and excitement felt by the reader. Poe builds suspense by using vivid words, repeating words and phrases, and describing a suspenseful setting.

For example, the author writes “I did for seven long nights and every night just at midnight” (Poe 90). The repetition causes the reader to wonder why the man keeps going back at midnight for seven nights, therefore this builds suspense. The repetition in this example shows the reader that the man is having a trouble getting into his house because he goes back seven times and every time at midnight because the man is sleeping. The man just wants to get his “pale blue eye” but he can’t because he can’t get in quietly but he keeps going back always at midnight which builds suspense. Poe further builds suspense through suspense through repetition when he writes, “Many a night, just at midnight” (Poe 90). The man does it for seven long nights just to get the pale blue eye because he didn’t like the way it looked on the old man so he thought he should have it so he decided to repeat going back to his house for seven long nights, which finally built
