In Sandra Cisnero’s House on Mango Street, Esperanza dreams of a nice house but instead moves to Mango Street, a low income area and a house under her expectations. Moving to Mango leaves Esperanza discouraged because she cares about the appearance of her home; moreover, she wants a place of her own. With the help of her unique neighbors, she grew to realize home is more than just a place. Throughout the story, Esperanza experiences trials and at the same time little joys that shaped her into the person she was at the end of the bildungsroman. Esperanza says in “Mango Says Goodbye Sometimes”,“They will not know I have gone away to come back. For the ones I left behind. For the ones who cannot out,” (Cisneros 110). Esperanza's mindset shifted from hating Mango to realizing its importance for her and her life. For example, she knows women like Sally, Mirveva, Rafela will never get the opportunity to move away from Mango Street. She wants to break the cycle for them, which further motivates her desire for independence. Her dream of a beautiful house and an uptown life still stands, but her real home is in Mango, the place she will always call home. In conclusion, Esperanza dreams of living in a wonderful house and in a luxury neighborhood but neglects what Mango Street has for her. Not only does she learn life lessons, but she also finds her identity through the people she meets. In the beginning, she didn't find a home as a place but instead through her mom. Moving further down the street, she met friends like Rachel and Lucy who gave her overwhelming joy and a supportive support system as she continues to grow up. Even though Esperanza had the support she still witnessed abuse, prejudice, poverty, that being said it didn't destroy her dreams of success in the future and ultimately created a stronger desire for the things she has been wanting. Even though Esperanza was not fond of Mango Street, it had an irreplaceable effect on her and her connections.
