Love is like the baking soda and wealth is like the vinegar; they can coexist in separately but when put together, they may explode. The author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, wrote the novel as if the narrator, Nick Carraway, was writing the novel. Nick Carraway is describing all the atypical events that occurred over the summer of 1922. Fitzgerald’s narrator mainly focuses on the events that occur due to his neighbor Jay Gatsby. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald portrayed the main character, Jay Gatsby, as the man who is obsessed with the ideas of love and wealth based on his actions and words in the story. Proving his wealth to Daisy Buchanan was a little hard for Jay Gatsby but his obsession with the idea of wealth led him to spend lavishly. Mr.Gatsby “took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one, before [Nick Carraway and Daisy Buchanan’, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel, which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many colored-disarray. While [admiring the shirts}, he brought more and the soft rich heap mounted higher - shirts with stripes and scrolls and plaids in coral and apple-green and lavender and faint orange, with monograms of Indian blue” (Fitzgerald 92). The abundance of shirts Gatsby brought out were all expensive and specialized shirts that many people did not have. By showing of these shirts showed the audience that he is insanely wealthy. Nick Carraway also is writing about how Gatsby became wealthy. In chapter six, the reader finds out that Jay Gatsby’s real name is James Gatz. At the age of seventeen, Gatsby met millionaire, Dan Cody, who mentors and allows Mr.Gatsby to travel on his yacht with him. When Cody dies, Jay Gatsby was supposed to inherit twenty-five thousand dollars but ended up not receiving any of the money
