In the novel The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, we as readers see two main systems. We see the Barberton Prison system and the Prince of Wales School system. In each of these systems we see a character trying to beat the system. In the prison, Geel Piet is trying to beat the system and in the school, Morrie Levy is trying to beat the system. A system is basically a way something is supposed to go or be done. Beating the system for these two characters is doing something that breaks the system, or way something has to be done, and in doing so, achieving personal gain. If one was not gaining anything, they would only be breaking the system, not beating it. Geel Piet beats the system of the prison by smuggling contraband into the prison. He wants to help his fellow prisoners who are suffering in the prison. His morals are not at a high standard and he has been in prison more than he has not been in prison. “He was also a recidivist, an incorrigible criminal who freely admitted that it was hopeless for him on the outside”(208). Morrie Levy beats the system by working with Peekay to make money in many different ways. The first thing he does is gamble on the results of Peekay’s boxing matches. After it got too risky to bet on the matches Peekay was participating in, the duo of Peekay and Morrie deciding to start another business. They opened up a bank that could give loans. “We called it the Boarders' Bank, but it simply became known as the Bank and was an immediate success”(353). The third thing they did and the best example of Morrie beating the system. In the Prince of Wales School, the curriculum is specifically designed and the students are meant to be taught in one way. Morrie designs a way to the students to receive a slightly different education. They put the things Ms. Borenstein sent them in her letters about the course materials into a book for the younger
