According to Coetzee, an artwork is always about something, an artwork deals with one or many issues. Therefore, this essay discusses the aboutness of Willem Boshoffs prison Hacks also known as prison sentences.
The title, which was originally given to the artwork was prison Hacks. Boshoff describes a hack as a person hired to carry out a dull routine work, but also a line vertically or horizontally drawn through something. This inspired Boshoff to name the vertical and horizontal writings on the granite “prison hacks”. Each line on the granite represent each passing day served in prison. The vertical hack represents a day a prisoner serves in his sentence, whereas the horizontal line represents a week that a prisoner serves in his sentence.
