Literature can help us understand big ideas and the importance of keeping our values. George Orwell’s political allegory Animal farm, written in 1945 is a good demonstration of showcasing this through the exploration of the dangers of totalitarian dictators who use absolute power as well the political autonomy to highlight the importance of your vote and the ability to overthrow those in charge. Orwell employs a range of literary techniques such as inclusive language, repetition and cumulative listing to demonstrate how language can be manipulated to deceive and exploit the vulnerable masses.
Good literature is timeless because it makes us aware of important, universal issues that can have a negative impact on the quality of our lives. When Snowball discusses his plans for building the windmill, Napoleon expresses her disagreement by demonstrating his own plans, “ Napoleon stood up and, uttered a high-pitched whimper, and nine enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn and dashed straight for snowball who is driven from the farm and never seen again”. The nine enormous dogs are used to symbolise dominance and how Napoleon uses the threat of violence to demonstrate authority and spark fear and terror into other animals to showcase that he’s in control. Furthermore, squealer also uses lies and deception in his speech to reassure the animals that Napoleons decision is right, “ Comrades, he said, “I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking his extra labour upon himself… No one believes more firmly than comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal”. Squealer uses emotive appeal
