The two main characters of the book are Winston and Julia. Winston works in the Ministry of Truth for the Party. But he is troubled by the way the party runs things. The party prohibited thoughts of rebellion and everything that could be rebellion or that is even slightly similar. Winston purchased a dairy to write his “rebellious” thoughts in, which is a crime punishable by death. Winston wants to learn and understand why the party exercises total control over Oceania, like they do. Winston doesn’t like how the party does what it wants too just to keep people under there control. This is how the Party sees everything that everyone does. And how they make sure that people stay under their control. They use telescreens as cameras to watch what everyone is doing. And they use telescreens and posters to display propaganda, to brainwash the people so they stay under the Party’s power that they have over the people. Big Brother is the head of the Party, he is the one who is said to be in charge of the Party. The existence of Big Brother however is unknown throughout the book. No one really knows if it exists. Big Brother is thought to be propaganda, created by the Party to keep the people under control. Since no one has seen or heard anything about Big Brother, other than he the head of the Party and he is always watching. The Ministry of Love is responsible for the torture of political prisoners. The Ministry of Truth is responsible for the spread of propaganda and lies. The Ministry of Plenty is responsible for the food rations and supplies. The Ministry of Peace is responsible for engaging in wars and starting wars against the enemy. Each ministry does the opposite of their name, they do bad, instead of good. The ministry’s helped keep the people under the Party’s control, and they done whatever they had to do, whether it was good or bad. They never done anything for the good of the people, they done what they were told from the
