Love can be a mental or emotional state. It can be interpersonal, familial, romantic, impersonal, or divine. But in Oceania, Big Brother is your family, Big Brother your reason and Big Brother is your God. "He loved Big Brother" (284), and that is the only love allowed. Winston and Julia’s love, therefore, is doubleplusungood for The Party. They share a common desire to rebel against Big Brother, however, are tremendously disparate in their motives. Their relationship is rare and a hopeful attempt at rebellion, but eventually grimly demonstrates the utter extent to which The Party manipulates basic human emotions, like love and passion, into nothing but tools to focus energy toward the party.

From the very start of 1984 he writes in his journal for the “future”. Winston is hopeful in saying, “To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone- to a time when truth exists and cannot be undone...greetings!” (27) This clearly demonstrates Winston’s interest in long-term liberation; he isn’t driven solely by a want for self-autonomy as much as his hope for a complete insurrection of The Party, one that will free the future. He even visits the Prole District and notices, “For the first time in his life he did not despise the proles or think of them merely as an inert force which would one day spring to life and regenerate the world. The proles had stayed human. They had not become hardened inside.” (157) He is distinctly searching for any means of freedom for future generations. “If there is hope, it lies in the proles.” (66) The proles were still human and Winston wanted the future to be human. Winston rebelled to save the
