Throughout the book, Elie Wiesel’s view of God changes. In the beginning, he begs Moishe the Beatle to help guide him in his studies of Kabbalah. Towards the middle of the book, he starts losing faith when he is forced out of his home. Most of the Jews lost faith in God when a little boy, the pipel, was hung. The pipel were often hated in the camp, but everyone loved this one. Even some of the guards had taken a liking to him. In the beginning, Elie Wiesel was desperate to learn more about God. He repeatedly asked his father to help him find a master to help guide him in his studies of Kabbalah. When his father explained that there were not any Kabbalists in Sighet, he set out to find one himself. That is when he stumbled upon Moishe the Beadle, a lonely and poor Jew. While the Jews were not very fond of the needy, they accepted Moishe because he was quiet and he stayed out of the way. Elie and Moishe would stay in the synagogue after all the faithful had left. Moishe would often tell him, “Man comes closer to God through the questions he asks Him…” (pg 5). When Moishe asked Elie why he prayed, he always answered with “I don’t know”. He always cried when he prayed. When Moishe asked him why he was crying, he replied, “Because something inside of me felt the need to cry.”(pg 4) …show more content…

The German officers were kind at first, but they started showing their true nature when Passover started. No matter what they were going through at this time, they still thought hell was worse. “People must have thought there could be no greater torment in God’s hell that of being stranded here, on the sidewalk, among the bundles, in the middle of the street under a blazing sun.” (pg 16). He went from praying every day, several times a day, to every other day. This is when his faith starts to
