Biography: Harriet Tubman was born as a slave on a Maryland farm. Her birth is said to have taken place in 1820 or 1821, but most enslavers didn't keep all birth documents. Life as a slave was very difficult for Harriet Tubman, her family of eleven children were living in a one-room cabin with her. She was only 6 years old when she was sold to a new family where she had to take care of a baby.
The “Underground Railroad” wasn’t really a railroad at all, in fact it wasn’t underground either. The Underground Railroad was a metaphor that described a way that slaves were transported from their plantations in the south all the way to Canada. Harriet Tubman was a woman who inspired many and is known for her bravery in working on the Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman’s work and bravery on the Underground Railroad continued her legacy, and together they all contributed to the abolitionist movement. Harriet Tubman’s most well known contribution to the abolitionist movement is her work on the “Underground Railroad.”

In the 1800’s, railroads were flourishing across America; the ideas of trains and a better way of transportation was a popular subject. However, a different “railroad” was set across the country; one that was hidden from sight. Although the Underground Railroad was not an actual “railroad” and was not underground, it played a significant part in transporting slaves across the country into freedom. Many Quakers and abolitionists served as “conductors” and helped runaway slaves, providing them with food, shelter, and a save journey to the North. One of the Underground Railroads most famous and successful conductors was Harriet Tubman.
Abolitionist and humanitarian Harriet Tubman recounted her experience with freedom from slavery. Harriet Tubman is one of the many leaders of civil disobedience. Civil disobedience is the violation of an unjust law and the acceptance of the consequences given to the protestor (Erika). In America, civil disobedience has played a noteworthy role in many social reforms that many take for granted today. Civil disobedience is not followed by everyone.
Struggles of Slavery The struggles of slavery in the American South involved family and life struggles and hard working conditions. Slaves had to work hard and it didn’t matter if you were hurt or sick. Harriet Tubman had physical pain daily and so did her family. Harriet Tubman was lashed five times before breakfast and she carried scares for the rest of her life.
It is important to fight for what you believe in because this will help us overcome many obstacles in the future. Even Though it may be difficult to speak up to society, we must take action and speak our mind. For instance, Harriet Tubman an important figure in history for fighting for the freedom she believed everyone deserves. She rescued and freed a vast amount of slaves, while putting at risk her own life.
Despite growing up in an environment that was cruel and hostile, Harriet still stepped forward for justice and showed her courage; willing to sacrifice her wellbeing for the good of someone else. That act alone, demonstrates the courage and bravery Harriet Tuban has. She was able to turn the pain and adversity she faced into power; to start and lead a whole social movement. Harriet Tubman took initiative and lead a life of courage, positively impacting slavery, through “[escorting] over 300 slaves to freedom”(pbs.org), taking 19 trips South. Harriet Tubman,” once proudly pointed out to Frederick Douglass, in all of her journeys she ‘never lost a single passenger.
When we talk about slavery, many historical names come to mind, the biggest being President Lincoln. Although Lincoln was against slavery, it proved to be a long road ahead before his emancipation proclamation was issued. Lincoln was not the first to confront issues of slavery in the United States. It took a seamlessly long time before words were spoken that could even begin to abolish slavery slowly. Blood was soon shed to stop this inhumane way of life, but at what cost?
Harriet tubman played a very important role in slavery. She had a major role by helping free slaves she was the conductor of the underground railroad which was used to help free slaves she was also very caring by helping create fundraisers for slaves without shelter or food. Harriet Tubman has made a difference in many people 's lives, not only by freeing slaves. Born a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland, Harriet Tubman was beaten and whipped by most of her masters as a child. One time she suffered a traumatic head wound when a slave owner threw a heavy metal weight that was supposed to hit another slave but hit her instead.
