At the beginning of the story Hester and William are arguing, about the boys being able to go to the circus. While they were talking, William would not answer Hester, but “it was not Hester’s custom to wait for an answer”. This shows that Hester is not very patient with her husband when they are trying to talk about things. Also Hester talks about the boys not getting to see much on the prairie and they should be able to go. Then William states “Nobody was ever hurt by going to the circus.” When he was a little boy, and all the animals that were there. It states that Hester smiles at the recollection, and how she was not expecting him to answer so fast. This is showing that she has finally gotten somewhere with him about the circus. While he is stating all this Hester is pulling her chair closer because she is interested in what he is saying about him being a little kid and going to the circus. It also says in the passage William chuckles, showing how he went from being serious to laughing about old times. As they are talking Hester thinks about their relationship and how since the children have grew up it has been a business one.
