Language Essay Homer, the author of The Odyssey, is a famous writer believed born sometime between the 12th and 8th centuries BC. He is famous for two epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, that have had a tremendous effect on Western culture. They are said to have been written during the Trojan War, adding to their importance in Greek cultures. Homer used diction in his writing, to express tone, which leads readers to believe he was very tentious.
According to Greek mythology and history, the Trojan War was the greatest war ever fought. Scholars still read of this story in Homer’s Iliad, an epic poem denoting the events that occurred during the tenth and final year of the conflict. However, this story was not immediately written down, but was told orally for several hundred years until the Greek reinvention of writing in 750 BCE. Some modern-day scholars argue that the gap of time between the events depicted in the book and the time in which it was written have allowed anachronisms to occur within the story.

This is partially because he helped create/spread certain ideas about Greece's past, and introduced the peer review system to boost Greece education at the time. Also, according to Plato himself, without Homer Greek education would be almost non-existent. Overall, Homer changed Greece's education, but he also changed how Greek citizens live their lives.

The Iliad is an epic composed of 24 books that narrate the final years of the trojan war; in which they were against Greece due to the abduction of Queen Helen of Sparta. Greece was considered an oral culture when The Iliad was recited around the country. This raised questions on the differences between oral and written cultural characteristics on how the story is executed and what effect it has on the audience.
The Iliad by Homer The Iliad was a really good representation of the chaotic war-torn times of the area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea; this includes the countries Rome and Greece. It was a time where nations were trying to expand their power and influence and warriors were claiming their spoils of war. I mean the beginning of book I of The Iliad, Achilles and Agamemnon are arguing over the rewards and the spoils of war. Agamemnon didn’t want to give up his prize girl Chryses in order to please the God Apollo and stop the plague and the rain of arrow falling from Olympus.
Homer uses this not only to foreshadow what is going to happen in the poem but also to show that the desires of the gods will be predominant and there is no doubt that they will have an active role in the war. The audience is told that the poem will focus on the anger of Achilles and his fury will lead to the gory, unrelenting, and painful death of countless men. Although the overall message of this opening tends to focus on human emotion and the impact of human emotion, through analysis of the final line one can see that the tragic outcome is all the doing of the almighty Zeus.
