How Jack has changed throughout the story
In the novel, Lord of the flies, we are introduced to Jack. Jack is a prestigious and well behaved choir boy. The only reason a choir boy would be caught on a stranded island is because of a plane crash. Not just being in the choir, he was the choir leader. What seemed to be the perfect person for their small group. However, Jack did not stay the same throughout this novel. He changed and slowly let the evil within him come to the outside. He turned into a savage.
At the beginning of the novel, Jack is pretty confident and would never be caught without his formal gown. He wore a black gown with a special hat for his choir. Here in the story, he maintained his usual self and had some sort of connection with civilization. When he was assigned the role as to lead the hunters, he caught his first pig and couldn't bring himself to stab it. This shows that he is still holding onto the order or his old life. Golding says, “They knew very well why he hadn't; because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood“ (3.) Jack can’t bring himself to kill the poor animal, his old ways staying with him.

He is able to kill things and is slowly losing his order. Jack also paints himself, which we think to be him hiding behind a mask so that he can express his savage ways. Golding tells us, “He capered toward Bill and the mask was a thing on its own, behind Jack hid, liberated from shame and self consciousness. “ (64).
