379 Words2 Pages
To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel about the progress of children opening up to the real harsh world they live. Jem is one of the children opened to the world by age. Jem matures from a naïve boy to an enlightened adolescent. In the first section of the novel, Jem is a bright boy who gets thrown into the real world. The cause of this is Mr. Nathan Radley filling the tree, where Jem and Scout continuously find little gifts, with concrete. Mr. Nathan Radley’s reason for filling the tree is that the tree is dying. When Jem gets home he asks Atticus, “Is that tree dyin’?” (84) and Atticus tells Jem he does not believe that it is. Later in the evening, Jem cries to himself realizing that not all adults will tell the truth like Atticus.
