“It is easy to become anything you wish, so long as you’re willing to forfeit your soul” (Yang 29). This statement was said to little Jin Wang and it stuck with him. It means something when you remember it years later and become something new. In the novel, “American Born Chinese '', the protagonist, Jin Wang is a teenage boy that isn't like the other boys, he is a chinese boy that gets discriminated against for who he is. This sets off a fire in him to change. Jin Wang thinks these changes are good but it only affects him and his peers around him. Jin Wang is a new student at a new school, during recess or lunch, he has a small interaction with a group of students that stereotype and discriminate for who he is. He is a boy eating his dumplings, but these students don't see it like that. These small remarks would change him to eat a more cultural american food, a sandwich (Yang 33-33). This small interaction between the group of students would then set off a chain of events because every small change Jin Wang does he is pinching in his way to become more american. On pages 97-98 Jin Wang sees that Angila, his crush, is attracted to Greg because of his hair. Jin Wang has an idea to change his hair. The next morning at school he has an interaction between his friends. Suzy says,” Jin?... Wei Chin jumps in,” why is your hair… MMPH.”... Suzy intervenes,” Nothing nice perm.” (Yang 98). Jin Wang is a complicated young character that has some growing to do. His actions now will come with repercussions. He may think changing his hair is good, but the result is that everytime he changes, a little bit of his background culture of being Chinese fades away. Jin Wang's actions sacrifice his friendships for near attention. Jin wang and suzy, wei chins girlfriends, are talking while he is at math circles, and suzy vents to jin about being called a chink. “Today, when Timmy called me a chink, I realized, deep down inside, I kind of feel like that all the time. Suzy gets emotional and starts to cry. Jin gets a vote of confidence and kisses her. This event caused Suzy to freak out and punch Jin in the face. But this isn't it, Wei chin finds out and confronts Jin about it. Jin belittles Wei about his culture being a F.O.B; fresh off the boat. And not being right for her. In Doing this Wei is not going to take and punches him in the face. This conflict pushes them away for months on end, no communication from both sides, until the monkey tells Jin to forgive himself and go to this Chinese cafe, where Wei chin and Jin wang reunite.
