Have you ever been in a situation where you have to choose a decision? Do you have to pick one or the other or can you accept both? American Born Chinese by Gene Yang is about a boy named Jin Wang who moves to a white culture school and he is discriminated against for being Chinese.He then makes a choice to abandon his Chinese culture and try to be all American. Because of Jin Wang's interaction with the American culture, he becomes embarrassed about his culture and changes throughout the novel to try and fit in the American culture, as a result he has to figure out his identity and what to do being stuck in between both cultures. The American culture, people come across the world to be a part of it,something a person wouldn’t understand unless they were a part of it. The American culture where people can be themselves and unique but also can be a part of the American culture.In the novel the reader can see that Jin has straight black hair and a bowl cut type haircut. Well Jin likes a stereotypical “American girl” blond and blue eyes, the only problem is he thinks Amelia,the girl he likes, likes Greg a white boy with blonde curly hair. On page 97 the reader can see Jin thinking in his head about Amelia, then Greg and Amelia, then just Greg, and the last box is Greg's blonde curly hair. “Jin?” “What?” “ Why is your hair-mmph” “Nothing! Nice perm!"( 98) This was the interaction between Jin and his 2 chinese friends Wei-Chen and Suzy. Wei-Chen was shocked and mad that his hair was changed. “Why is his hair a Brocoli?!” ( 98) Jin changes and tries to fit in with the American culture because he wants to win the girl he likes by not being himself but by changing his hair to the stereotypical white boy blonde curly hair because he thinks that is why she likes Greg. Second place Jin changes his culture is on pages 193 and 194 the reader can see a wise woman who is Chinese and she asked in Chinese “ So,little friend,you’ve done it.” “Now what would you like to become?” The reader can see what Jin Wang wants to be because he is Chinese and on pages 194-197 he becomes a white boy with blonde hair. Jin Wang is now known as Danny because “A new face deserved a new name” ( 198). Jin changes to try and fit in with American culture and look like the stereotypical American boy.
