In fact, John Proctor was the first character in the Crucible to change. In the beginning of the play he was very prideful, and he wanted to protect his affair with Abigail Williams. When Abigail tried to bring up the affair with John he tried to make Abigail get out of her mind, as if they never done anything. In the play, John says “Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin’ for you more” (). As Abigail tries to tell her feelings and the truth of the affair to John he refused to hear it by saying “Aye, but we did not” ().
