In a sleepy southern town, many of the people are innately curious. Curiosity manifests itself in several forms throughout Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Various characters demonstrate curious or inquisitive qualities. Whether they are exploring imaginary worlds, obsessively reading everything they can lay their hands on, or just picking up a bit of gossip, the characters stand out as curious individuals. A number of them will do anything to learn up-to-date things. However, three of the key examples are Scout, Dill, and Miss Stephanie Crawford. Inquisitiveness appears in many different ways. Scout Finch is a young tomboy growing up in racially divided southern Alabama. However, throughout the turmoil of her life, inquisitive qualities appear. She greatly enjoys exploring the woods outside. She also loves reading, much to the chagrin of her teacher. When his curious nature leads him to, along with Jem and Scout, run through the Radley garden at midnight, the adults are not pleased. In this way, curiosity can get the characters in and out of trouble. However, Dill conjures up an excuse that saves them. “In the glare from the streetlight, I could see Dill hatching one: his eyes widened, his fat cherub face grew rounder. “What is it, Dill?” asked Atticus. “Ah—I won ‘em from him,” he said vaguely.”(p
