How Does Liam O Flaherty Show Courage In The Sniper

“The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty is a short story that takes place in Ireland. The main character is a sniper for the Irish war, when some conflict happened and, the sniper revealed himself, the enemy started shooting him. The enemy shot the sniper in the forearm, he was forced to cut off his forearm and fired back killing the enemy, only to find out that the enemy was his brother. Through the actions of the character, readers understand that Liam O’Flaherty shows that everything takes a little amount of courage.

At the beginning of the story, the sniper left his house and went up to his little rooftop, he waited for any movement of the other side. He sees movement on the other side and sits quietly, waiting. Eventually, a lady spotted him and pointed to him. “An informer. The turret opened. A man’s head and shoulders appeared, looking towards the sniper. The sniper raised his rifle and fired.” (page 58) It was at this point that he saw that a spy was giving intel about his side and he wasn't going to just watch this happen. The sniper is now faced with a gruesome decision. Finally, he made the decided his arm, but his job wasn't over with the enemy. “He took a steady aim, his hand trembled with eagerness, pressing his lips together, he took a deep breath through his nostrils and fired. He was almost defeated with the report and his arm shook with the recoil.” (page 59) The Sniper realized that he needed to do something about the person who shot him, if not then the enemy could have come over to finish the job. The Sniper knew that to keep himself safe or feel safe/ win the war, he fired his gun, even though his arm was gone and hurting. This points out that everything takes a little amount of
