Eli's life was changed drastically in a matter of a couple hours. He saw and went through a lot causing him to lose his religious faith. He isn’t the only one who lost his belief. Others like his father began to lose his faith and sense of hope. At the age of 14 Eli and his family were evacuated from their homes into a ghetto afterwards they are sent to a concentration camp better known as Auschwitz. Eli then begins to see how people are brutally murdered and tortured. He is shocked knowing that god would allow such a gruesome act to happen. In addition, he begins to lose his faith. For instance, while Eli walks to his bunker he sees hundreds of infants being thrown into a ditch that was lit on fire and kids being thrown into the sky and shot for shooting practice. After, such acts he begins to question his faith. “How could any god permit this to happen.” As a result, of witnessing such gruesome acts he refuses to participate in any religious activities. For example, when Eli's father is beaten multiple times he begged for an answer on why he was getting beat so badly. “Why my son, why is this happening to me, why are these men hitting me.” As a result, Eli's father loses his faith and no longer wants to fight for his freedom and life due to his endless suffering. Consequently, he hit a point in his life where life and the things around him no longer mattered to him. He refused to eat any food that his son offered him. However, his suffering is too intense and moaned in pain at that. His cries of pain resulted in guards getting frustrated and having to beat him
