Jack Wilichowski ELA 8 Block 8/9 21 January 2023 Fear The Young Elites by Marie Lu follows Adelina as she goes on a journey to find her true meaning in her life and why she is different from other people after the blood fever that swept through their country earlier killing thousands and physically scaring the survivors. Normal survivors have markings such as different hair color, cuts on skin, and little deformities. The survivors of the blood fever are called malfettos. However interestingly some survivors have powers given to them from the underworld, these people are known as elites. She witnesses death which hardens her mind to suffering. Throughout the book she tries to learn how to control power with physical and emotional attributes. The question is will she let her anger and her past trauma take over her future? A theme from the book The Young Elites suggests that implying fear over someone can be used to control them or to motivate them to become stronger. In the beginning of the book Adelina has flashbacks from her childhood to further help the readers understand how evil her dad was. She shares a flashback when …show more content…
An example of this from my book is when the king tells Teren that if he keeps failing in the executions of the malfettos and the elites that he would be beheaded. Examples of this occur on page 172. The king specifically says, “I should throw you in a dungeon cell…The next time you embarrass me I will have your head.” Then Teren goes on to say, “There won’t be a next time, your majesty.” (172 Lu). This shows that the king uses fear to try and motivate Teren to work harder to capture and kill the elites and malfettos. We know that it motivates Teren because he tells the king that there won’t be a next time. All in all this shows how fear can be used to motivate characters in the book The Young
