Generally throughout stories, a character grows in some way shape or form. A common way characters grow is from an innocent child to an experienced adult. In the graphic novel Persepolis written by Marjane Satrapi and in the essay A Letter to My Mother written by Barbara Kingsolver, the idea of the main character growing and understanding the complex issues surrounding them is a common theme. The graphic novel Persepolis, follows the childhood and teenage years of the main character Marjane. Marjane grew up in a difficult time of transitions, protests, and revolution in Iran and truly never had the typical “innocent” childhood people usually imagine. At one point Marjane was tired of not being able to participate in the protests her parents were attending, so she and her maid went to a protest secretly. Marjane did not understand the consequences of her actions or the dangers of what could happen due to the fact she was innocent in the sense of not knowing what could truly happen. It was not until she returned home when her parents were upset that she went because it turned out to be “Black Friday” where many of the protesters were shot and killed by Iranian soldiers. “We had demonstrated on the very day we shouldn't have: on "Black Friday." That day there were so many killed in one of the neighborhoods that a rumor spread that Israeli soldiers were responsible for the slaughter. But in fact it was really our own who had attacked us,” (43). As Marjane grew older she learned and became more experienced in the sense of what she can and can not do to avoid being arrested, although she still pushed her limits.
