In The Visitor, a movie directed by Tom Mccarthy, a college professor, named Walter, travels to New York to attend a conference and finds a young couple, Tarek and Zenab, in his apartment. This movie shows how music can connect to people on a different level and also shows how trying different things is what life's all about. It also shows that life is full of many hardships that have to just be moved past and not give up. Tom Mccarthy uses certain techniques to portray these themes including lighting, setting, actions, and various other ways. This movie has a lot to do with music and it shows how music can connect with people on many levels whether the connection be emotional and just opening their feelings up in general. He goes to the door and opens it up to meet an older lady. Next we see them at the piano with her trying to teach Walter how to play piano. It appears as if he is trying to force himself to learn the piano because he is not relaxed when he plays. It is learned, later on when it shows him and Tarek having a conversation, that Walter's wife died and she was a piano player. This is most likely the reason why he is trying to learn the piano. During this time when he is attempting to learn the piano. The setting is in Connecticut and the lighting is darker than later on. The mood also has a sad feeling to it; this is supported by the way Walter acts which is sad also. It also shows him cooking by himself and tells us how many piano teachers he has gone through which goes back to show us the depressing mood of this first part of the movie. Then it moves into the second part of the movie where he goes to New York and finds people living in his apartment and he gets threatened by Tarek, after walking in on Zenab in the bathtub.
