Books can change the way people live. Books can change religion, and even the way people live their lives. In Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, during the time of Hitler's reign, the book Mein Kampf has changed the lives of Germans and the characters. The books have been used as protection and even to express thoughts and feelings. Mein Kampf is significant to the novel because of the way Max and Germany used it, and the way it resulted. Mein Kampf is significant to the Nazis because it basically hypnotized them in ways that changed them as people. It hypnotized them because at the time In the text it states, “And what trash is this girl reading? She should be reading Mein Kampf” (105). This is hypnotizing Hans Junior because ever since he came …show more content…

Max has used it for protection from Nazi soldiers because this is happening when the Nazis have taken over, and Max is a Jew so he is required to go in hiding or he will be caught resulting in him being held captive, and could even result in death. Mein Kampf protects him from death because in the text it says, “... he read from the copy of Mein Kampf. His savior” (157). Mein Kampf is his savior because if he never had it while on the train and while going to the Hubermann’s, then people would just see a jew walking around with nothing but a key, so it looks suspicious and they would turn him in. The book didn’t only protect him, but he also used it to make a story of his own, and express his thoughts and feelings through it. Max also uses Mein Kampf to create his own book: The Word Shaker. In the Word Shaker Max put all of his thoughts, sketches and dreams, but there was also a story for Liesel. In the text it states, “... the moment the word shaker and the young man set foot in the world, the tree finally began to show the ax marks” (450). This is showing that in The Word Shaker, when Max or Liesel were the tree, it wouldn’t fall, but since they came off, the tree fell showing that the power of their words could hold the tree up. This is showing the true power of words, and if Max didn’t do this, then nobody could truly …show more content…

It is a negative impact that he was protected from the Nazis because their main job was to capture jews and send them away. Max just used Mein Kampf against them because if somebody saw him then it would look normal, but without Mein Kampf then they would take him away. Even though he did all of that, he still got captured. A negative impact was that during the Jew parade, Liesel confronted Max and he told her “... they got me a few months ago” (511). This is showing that even though Max wrote his book that spread the message that they can defeat Hitler with words, he still got captured for all of the good that he has done. Him receiving Mein Kampf also didn’t do him any good in the end. In the text it reads, “... he received a used copy of Mein Kampf” (128). Since he got Mein Kampf, he was able to write his books and show how he truly is, but Mein Kampf also doomed him because since it hypnotized the Germans, and that is the reason they took Max. If Hitler hadn’t hypnotized them then they would have no intentions to take the Jews, but instead of Max using words to help himself, Hitler used words to be able to take Max and all of the
