In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, Clarisse McClellan plays a crucial role. Challenging the expectations of how people should behave in this dystopian society. Her free spirit and deep curiosity make her stand out from everybody else. Clarisse challenges Montag’s conformity and makes him eager to question his society's rules and to explore, changing his perspective. Clarisse's role was necessary for Montag to realize the problem of his society, she opened his eyes and helped him begin his journey. Without Clarisse, Montag would have never been able to have enough courage to challenge his beliefs or perspective. Clarisse gives Montag enlightenment, she makes him question his life, his job, and his happiness. And also his knowledge, making him want to know more about history and break the rules. How did it start? How did you get into it? How did you pick your work and how did you happen to think about taking the job you have” You're not like others” (p.21). These quotes show how Clarisse's curiosity makes him wonder the answers for them too, thinking more about life and everything related to him or society. She also talks about society and how they are different from her. She is very curious and she wants more knowledge too. Clarisse is young and beautiful, she is different from anyone else, and that gets Montags attention because of that. She doesn't agree with society's rules, and she doesn't follow them either. “I’m antisocial, they say. I don't mix it up. It's so strange. I'm very social indeed. It all depends on what you mean by social, doesn't it?”. This means that she doesn’t fit with other people because she is considered “different”, but she doesn't seem to care, she is not willing to change just to please others. She was interested in learning from Montag, but in the end Montag was the one that learned from her. Even though Montag was a fireman, Clarisse achieved what no one else could have, she changed him.
