Don’t you listen to all the soft, motivational songs when you feel low? Don’t we start dancing to a peppy number as soon as we hear it? Yes that’s the power of music. Someone has truly said:
“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”
Music is so evocating and overwhelming that it sometimes leaves you pondering. Music truly has an intricate relationship with our mood and emotions. As the quote says, music transports you to another world and expresses what cannot be expressed in words. Over the past decade, extensive research with the help of functional neuro-imaging techniques has clearly indicated that there is a strong correlation between music and brain. These areas of the brain in fact directly affect our emotions. In fact there have been several cases of seizures caused by a certain type of music. This certainly establishes ground for the evidence that music has prominent impact on brain and thus, impacts emotions as well.
Brain is one complex organ which processes tons of information every second. It has a wide network of neurons, the brain cells which transmit information throughout the brain. Information is transferred through chemicals called neurotransmitters. It has been found that neurotransmitters like Dopamine, Serotonin and Norepinephine influence one’s moods and emotions. Dopamine also called the feel good chemical gives you a happy-elated feeling when released. Serotonin is another neurotransmitter associated with regeneration of brain cells, which eases depression.
