How Does O Brien Show Winston's Brotherhood In 1984

When we meet new people, we like to believe they don’t always have bad intentions. But, some want to hurt others in order to make them think a certain way. In the 1984 novel by George Orwell, O’Brien turns Winston into a member of the Brotherhood in order to convert him back to a party member, since his beliefs are straying from the party’s. When Winston sees O’Brien at work, he is sure that he is a member of the Brotherhood trying to recruit him. O’Brien even invites Winston over in a sneaky way, saying “But a few advanced copies [of the Newspeak Dictionary] have been circulated. it might interest you to look at it, perhaps?”. He tells him of the Brotherhood and how dangerous it is to be a part of it, how they change people to look and act differently, even with amputated limbs. He tells him about the book by Goldstein that’s all about the brotherhood. But, even with an entire secret organization behind them, O’Brien says, “...you will be fighting in the dark”, because of how dangerous it could be if the Brotherhood was found. O’Brien even tells them that they will be caught one day and that he will be a different person. He just doesn’t tell them he’s the one that’s going to catch and torture Winston. Eventually, Winston is caught and sent to the Ministry of Love, just like O’Brien said. After being there for a while, he shows up in his cell. Winston believes he’s been arrested, but O’Brien says “They got me a long time ago.Don’t deceive yourself, you did know it”, implying Winston should’ve known O’Brien had been tricking him. He then goes on to torture Winston into confessing everything he’s done so he can convert him back to a party member.
