1984 + The Testing Essay Anson Miller Mrs. Southall January 9th Imagine living in a world where everything you do is monitored and you don’t have any individual freedom. The government has strict laws that can severely punish you for the smallest infraction. These kinds of scenarios are what a totalitarian government would do to keep and maintain its control. Examples of these would be the governments in 1984 and The Testing. Both used numerous different ways to control their citizens. The governments both accomplish this by using individuality as a means of control over their citizens without much fail. If all of the people in society were forced to be the same then there would be a dim chance for change. What's more, no one wants to go …show more content…

This is the reason why countless people just live a life of struggle, even if they try to be different or don’t listen they can be killed. In return this causes them to live a life of fear. This type of control is just easy for them to enforce and maintain considering if they force it on you while your mind is developing then you wouldn’t know you were under control. Furthermore, in The Testing, they achieve a strong grip on the testing participants through their individuality. One way they do this is when a candidate is picked for the testing they will probably never set eyes on their family ever again. By doing this they limit the outside influence that they can get. They would give the threat that they can tap into your mind and observe if you committed any thoughtcrime. This means if you ever thought about doing a crime then you committed any thoughtcrime, even if you didn’t do it you still thought about it and therefore are guilty of treason. “The Thought Police would get him just the same. He would still have committed, even if he had never set pen to paper the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime''(Orwell 19). Winston knew that his time would come when the thought police would finally catch him. He knew this since he committed thoughtcrime by writing in his journal and he didn’t like big brother. Knowing this information, he tried to eventually pry deep into the secrets of his world and stand out. However, this just ended up making him meet someone that eventually would be the person who tortured him. All this would happen because he was different and he couldn’t be himself or have a different personality than the rest.
