First of all, we should ask ourselves the question ‘’What is insanity?’’. Most people would define it as a state of being or acting irrationally or senselessly. If this definition was to apply to the society we live in today and the present values, Winston most likely would be considered as a sane person. He has the ability to think critically and does not stick to only one version, despite living in a totalitarian regime. The book is full example, as one of the main themes throughout the book is Winston’s growing desire for some sort of rebellion. Often, we get to hear that criminals were not out of sound mind when they committed their crimes and might receive lighter punishments for that reason. Winston is not like that. He knows exactly what he is doing and still holds a sense of moral when he commits the thoughtcrime at the beginning of the book when he makes the diary entry. He is aware that thoughtcrime is something despicable in the society he lives in and frightens when someone knocks on the door, thinking the Thought Police is already here to arrest him.

However, the Party’s definition of ‘’insane’’ is also something worth consideration. As I was finding out more about the norms of the society the characters in ‘’1984’’ are members of, I was quite terrified, since these norms seemed rather inhumane to me. If you are lucky enough and live in a democratic country, a lot of depends on the way these extraordinary ideas are presented by the individuals. For example, we could all agree that Adolf Hitler was not completely sane when you think of everything that has happened during World War II because of him and his views on e.g. Jewish people. However, I personally have not encountered anyone in real life that would have views typical for the right wing that has gotten deemed off as someone dangerous. Of course, there are people who perform hate speech or commit hate crime toward minority groups, but the vast majority is still considered sane, despite having a different political view than the one preached by the government here in Sweden. While many people around the world have the privilege in the form of free speech, there are countries, of which citizens sadly do not have the ability to speak their minds, and North Korea is an obvious example of such a country, Even though the regime is not as extreme as it is in 1984 when it comes to surveillance, it is possible to notice many similarities, especially after reading Barbara Demick’s ‘’Nothing to Envy’’, which tells the stories of North Korean refugees.
