Narwin, like the assistant principal suggested and get on with his life. However, he stood strong saying he was expressing his patriotism. People might say he was definite because Ms. Narwin was purposely giving him bad grades. Ms. Narwin said multiple times throughout the novel that Philip is bright and has potential and she even begs the assistant principal to not suspend him.
Their survival on the island was an enormous part of their development. Phillip became blind and had to survive on the island for months like that. Chuck may not have gotten blind, but he gained quite a few injuries. He also stayed on the island for four years, which was way longer than Phillip's stay. He also tried to depart from the island, but Phillip did not.
Philip’s hate toward her makes him lie constantly, making him spread misinformation to the world outside of school. Philip’s decision to act out during the morning announcements were the start of consequences for him and the people around him. This hurt his dad's feelings and Philip was using his anger of not being on the track team on others. “I won’t waste time on english.” In the book Philip repeatedly said the teacher had it out for him but admitted in the beginning that he didn’t try in english. If he would have tried he would have gotten a passing grade and been on the track team and not tried to annoy miss narwin and not have gotten suspended. Even if he was helpless at the beginning, Phillip became more brave at the middle of the novel. Phillip’s actions can show how he developed bravery.
