Santiago's temptation is when he has the choice whether or not to stay with Fatima and abandon his Personal Legend. After leaving Fatima he has a difficult time coping with the separation, even if Fatima is a woman of the desert, who knows he will return. The Alchemist offers him a sole piece of advice, “love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend.” (120) Santiago’s heart is aching for the loving arms of Fatima. He realizes that he needs to focus on what he needs, pursuing his Personal Legend and not what he desires to be with Fatima.

The Alchemist helped and added challenges to Santiago's journey so that he could improve himself. Santiago learned about alchemy during his whole path and applied it also. The Alchemist is also really important in the story because of his help.
In the novel The Alchemist written by Paulo Cohelo is about Santiago and his quest to discover a treasure. This novel carries multiple strong themes of love. Santiago falls in love romantically with two characters: the merchant’s daughter, who remains unnamed, and Fatima. These characters follow the archetypes that enhance how the author, Paulo Cohelo, views love and its importance. In the Alchemist, Paulo Coelho explores the lover archetype to illustrate that love is something that is so strong it can change your perspective on life.
As he was digging for treasure at the Pyramids he could feel the pressure of the men walking down to him. He reaches the endpoint of his dream and now he deals with the fear that he can’t find his treasure. After the pressure of the men beating him, he realizes that his treasure isn’t at the Pyramids. The overall fear of the men and the realization of his treasure brought him down for a moment of his journey. Santiago employs perseverance to conquer the fear of the last step of his journey.
When the alchemist presented Santiago with the choice to stay at the oasis, or leave and achieve his personal legend, Santiago struggled to find the correct answer. The alchemist let Santiago know that if he stayed in the oasis, for the first year his marriage would be great and so would his marriage. Over time Santiago and Fatima would drift apart, and he would loose his job. But on the other hand, if he decided to voyage into the desert in seek of finding his personal legend he worried that he might loose Fatima. He thought, "...
He starts working for a crystal merchant. The merchant explains to him that it was pointless. That even if he worked for an entire year, he would still not have enough money to make it there. That made Santiago want to abandon his personal legend. He started focusing on making money to move back to Spain and return to being a shepherd.
The Importance of Perseverance At many times in people’s lives, they consider giving up. This is also true for Santiago, the protagonist in Paulo Coelho's fantasy novel The Alchemist. Santiago is on a journey to find a hidden treasure he saw in a dream. Along this journey he continues to contemplate whether he should just give up, or continue his adventure.

In 1947 a Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl with his crew went into a journey across the Pacific Ocean using the Kon-Tiki, which is a raft made of materials and technologies available to those people at that time with modern equipment. Heyerdahl wanted to prove that they are able to make that long journey by the raft itself even without the modern equipment they were having in it such as a radio, in order to prove his theory that the South Sea Islands were originally colonized by South Americans. Heyerdahl and a small team went to Peru, and made the Kon-Tiki from native materials in a native style by Spanish conquistadores. The main body was made of balsa tree lashed together with hemp ropes. The bow was made of Pine splashboards.
The book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is about a boy named Santiago and his journey to achieve his personal legend. Santiago meets many people during his journey including a palm reader, old man, thief, crystal merchant, girl, and an alchemist. As he travels to achieve on his journey he has to overcome many obstacles and travel a great distance. As he meets people and overcomes obstacles he learns things that he need to learn to achieve his personal legend. Paulo Coelho uses the charters Santiago, the crystal merchant, the Englishmen and Fatima to explore the theme of a dream can come true if one never gives up on pursuing it.
He is robbed at the beginning of his journey and must work hard to earn back the money he lost. Then, he is able to travel into the desert, facing more peril along the way. This is where he meets the Alchemist, who tells him, “You must not let up, even after coming so far” (113). The wise man teaches him things unknown to most people. With his instruction, Santiago survives his travels in the desert, even while faced with war and threats of death.
Santiago then tells the alchemist: “My heart is a traitor. It doesn’t want me to go on.” The alchemist replied with a smart answer and said “That makes sense. Naturally, it’s afraid that, in pursuing your dream, you might lose everything you’ve won.” A fear of uncertainty is what Santiago is feeling and he worries he’ll lose everything he’s accomplished so far.
… The boy was shaking with fear, but the alchemist helped him out of the tent. … the alchemist continued, “usually the threat of death makes people a lot more aware of their lives.”” (Coelho 140 6 8, Coelho 142 2) Just like before Santiago is afraid and doesn't know what to do in a situation of adversity. But he does not give up he perseveres and developes
During the whole story Santiago is trying to find his personal legend, he is trying to find his purpose in life. Therefore in the Alchemist, the most important thing is personal legend. Everything is based off Santiago’s personal legend, if he wouldn’t of became a shepherd the book wouldn’t be all about him following his personal legend and trying to figure out what his was. Santiago has to figure out a bunch of new things that lend his to his personal
The alchemist travels with Santiago until an Optic monastery where he changes lead into gold by using the Philosopher’s stone. He gives Santiago some gold and sends him off alone. Finally he reaches the pyramids but is met by two men who mock him in his belief of a dream. Before leaving one of the men tell Santiago of his own dream.
