Santiago demonstrates his loyalty throughout The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway through his relationship with Manolin, Joe DiMaggio, and the Marlin. Santiago has known Manolin since he was a young boy and over time, they have developed a connection because “The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him” (Hemmingway 10). This leads the reader to believe that almost everything Manolin has learned about fishing which creates an almost father relationship between the two. Alongside this fact, we can see Manolin becoming Santiago’s caretaker gradually throughout the beginning of the novel. Santiago demonstrates his self-discipline while fighting the Marlin. He sees that his other line is being bitten, and instead of trying to hold both lines at once, he takes the time to cut the other line and give his attention to the fish on the line that was bitten. In this scene that is depicted we can see Santiago struggle to keep the fish on however since he has disciplined himself, he knows the correct actions to take for the fish to not get away. This shows his discipline because the event not only shows Santiago’s intelligence but also shows us his will to fight. This event provides great insight into Santiago’s character and mentality. Even though Santiago faces a massive task when one of his lines snaps, he continues to wrestle the Marlin to attain the most valuable reward to him. Rather than Santiago letting go of the line he remains hooked to the fish for two days fighting the grueling pain that is shooting through his hands. Santiago fights for over two days to catch the marlin and come home with his trophy. Even though the sharks attack the fish he still leaves its remains alongside the boat and continues to sail back. Even though Santiago’s fish was mangled to the point it was unrecognizable he keeps it attached and brings it back anyway to show the battle he faced. Santiago can also be seen following a strict daily routine that he applies no matter the condition. Despite his old age he stays fit and follows the routine he has always followed. The reader can see that Santiago has not caught a fish in 84 days (about 3 months), despite this fact he still goes out one more day and ends up catching the biggest fish he has ever witnessed. Even though Santiago has not caught a fish, he sticks with his routine that has not been successful and ends up catching the massive marlin.
