Marjane Satrapi is far from an ordinary girl, especially in her prime when she lived through the Islamic Revolution as such a young child. Throughout the graphic novel Persepolis, Satrapi uses pictures with detailed descriptions to get readers to understand what life was like for her and even allow them to imagine being there themselves. Being so young, this little girl has seen it all. She lived through the overthrow of the Shah and witnessed how the Iran-Iraq war affected the people in Tehran. This novel demonstrates to readers how to continue on with their lives smiling and being confident, even when it seems like their world is falling apart. Satrapi goes through numerous life and personality changes. The presence of God in Satrapi’s life is rather inconsistent, and she shows how the presence and disappearance of Him shapes her life through graphic comic strips. Similar to the last situation, Marji yet again finds herself struggling with her emotions and innocence due to the revolution. As time passes, she has gained a fair amount of knowledge regarding politics and has begun to accept the consequences. Marji learns about torture and she had invents a game where the loser would be a victim. Marji becomes very involved in her game and is blind to the reality of it all. She looks at herself in the mirror and her reflection shows an evil look with horns. After noticing what she has become, Marji starts crying to her mother, once again realizing the reality of her world around her. God returns again after being gone, with full understanding and support. Marji accepts god into her life right away and says, “The only place I felt safe was in the arms of my friend”
