Effects of Steam Engines
The effects of steam-powered engines that existed around the time of the Industrial Revolution have influenced the development of the modern modes of power. Steam-powered engines were an important technological development because they allowed for easier, quicker, and farther means of transportation; they increased production rates in many factories; and almost any combustible material could be used to power them, whereas in the past, specific materials were needed for windmills and watermills (Whipps). The steam engine had geographically, culturally, economically, and sociologically changed civilization at this time. By understanding how the steam engine changed society during this time period, we can draw conclusions about how electric motors will change society today. It is likely that the electric motor will have similar effects as the steam engine did during its time because as the saying goes, history repeats itself. …show more content…

Comparing the effects of the steam engine to today’s society, it is a reasonable prediction for one to make that the electric motor will have similar effects on the world today. For example, electric motors have already been used to power everyday items such as fans, fridges, and washing machines (“Social Impact- Electric Motor”). This advancement is similar to that of the steam-powered engine being used to power factory machines rather than using windmills or watermills. Before we know it, in this day and age, cars with electric motors will be used by a majority of the population, and steam motors, or any other type of motor for that matter, will be obsolete, just as windmills and watermills had. Clearly, the steam engine has already impacted the modes of transportation and production around the world, and it is very likely that electric motors will have very similar effects on
