While the longtime resident's half see it as something that can be good with the old rundown houses being fixed up, reduction in crime, increasing property value and new shops popping up, they also fear the worse. From the policymaker's perspective gentrification also has several positives. It can reduce vacancies as those abandoned and rundown homes get bought and fixed up, declining neighborhoods become stabilized and diverse and all with no government involvement. While gentrification is neither all negative nor all positive, the negatives for the most vulnerable are those with the worst fear, the fear of being pushed out of their homes, the residents.
It is this displacement that causes segregation in cities like Cleveland, Ohio and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. However, if the meaning of gentrification is changed, and people work towards making sure the upper-income families and the underprivileged are able to live together in the same community, segregation would subside. Form dictates function, and function is necessitated by situation. The internet increases access to information. What does Gentrification mean? Gentrification is a transformation process that typically occurs in urban neiborhoods or areas. When Higher-income people move in and displace Lower-income existing residents to make places look modern. This is important because it effects Lower-income people because they get sent, forced, or just move out to a poor place, but gentrification has been associated with some positive, such as urban revitalization and lower crime rates, critics charge that it marginalizes racial and ethnic minorities and destroys the character of urban neiborhoods. My Thesis is that Gentrification should be done but Higher-income people shouldn’t replace Lower-income people just because they don’t have the money to make their places more modern, I know modern is better but we should be fair with everything.
In her book, Root Shock: How Tearing up City Neighborhoods Hurts America, and What We Can Do About It, Dr. Mindy Fullilove explores urban planning of cities through discussing the beauty versus equity aspects of planning. First she introduces urban renewal in terms of piercing the streets of cities in order to widen and make them beautiful (Fullilove, 53). However in the effort to beautify cities or make “progress”, as they called it at the time, urban planners destroyed the homes and lives of the poor (Fullilove, 53). An individual by the name, Marc Weiss, had stated that ‘ “urban renewal agencies in many cities demolished whole communities inhabited by low income people in order to provide land for private development of office buildings, hotels, trade centers to high income luxury buildings”’ (Fullilove, 59).
Of course this brings lots of revenue into the city, and perhaps more safety to the once troubled neighborhood. CNN Money states that new job opportunities emerge with construction and new stores, homeowners benefit from rising property values, decline in crime, and even credit scores improve (Gillespie). According to a local on reddit, the East Austin area is a “shadow of what it used to be. It is gentrifying all to hell[... ]”(Reddit user atreides78723).
Gentrified Seattle: Social and Economic Implications The American urban centers are rapidly shifting. A reversed trend of suburbanization has taken roots over the past decades where middle class white professionals are moving into inner cities. In many large cities, such as Seattle, this process of gentrification (renewal of inner cities by) drove up the property value of many predominantly low income and black neighborhoods, and many original tenants are forced out due to the skyrocketing rents. One prominent example is the Central District, which is [Seattle’s traditionally African American community.
A large piece of evidence that i found against urban sprawl was that urban sprawl creates a mass increase in pollution. It pollutes the air, water, it degrades human health, also with more people that means more people are dependent on cars and an increase of cars meansmor carbon dioxide is emitted into our atmosphere which effects our environment horribly. Another piece of evidence i found was that there's a huge loss in land from open space,parks, farmland habitats including land for agriculture. But an alternative i found was smart growth its a planned economic and community development that attempts to curb urban sprawl and worsening environment. The real impacts of gentrification are often intricate, contradictory and vary depending on the type of urban center. In a way, gentrification has greatly altered American urban landscape over the years.
Gentrification is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle-class taste. Real Estate investors usually take low-income places that they feel have a chance to prosper economically, and turn them into areas that attract the middle and upper class workers. In doing so they feel like the low-income areas will be safer and more appealing, attracting more people to visit and live there. An improvement to a poor district sounds beautiful, but is gentrification as great as it’s sought out to be? Many residents have their doubts about gentrification due to the idea that the costs of their living will go up and they will be driven out of their neighborhoods.

What is gentrification? Gentrification to me is nothing more than a system that robs the locals of their neighborhood by changing what made the neighborhood unique in order to turn a profit and make it a more desirable place to live. It is easily recognizable by the amount of construction occurring and the remodeling of homes, stores parks etc. this is commonly seen in low-income neighborhoods because it has a great starting ground.
