Did you know that cheerleading used to be an all-boy sport? Cheerleading went from an all-boy sport to girls, then to girls and boys and now only girls, cheerleading has evolved a lot. Let me tell you all about how cheerleading started. Cheerleading was invented by a guy named Johnny Campbell. Cheerleading took place at an Ivy League college sporting event after Jonny Campbell assembled a group together then they took the fear and made a sideline cheering team only boys could join tho. The first cheerleading chant ever was “Ray Ray Ray! Tiger Tiger Tiger! " This cheer was shouted at Princeton University. Men could not compete in the competition. If men went to compete in a competitive cheerleading competition, they would not score any points and would instantly get last place. This rule applies only in Michigan. All-Stars can have men cheer, but it depends on what team you join. Some won't allow guys to do all star, some all star teams do. 7 levels of All-Star cheerleading were invented. It's interesting how much cheerleading involved, we started with 1 type of cheer to 3 and a bunch of stunts and tumbling and chants you can do. On April 24th 2004 the first cheerleading championship was held. The winners were Florida and Texas. Now these competitions for All-Star cheerleading are known as Worlds, which is when the best of the best teams go head-to-head against each other, and they crown the best cheering team. There are 22 teams that get invited to the worlds each year, and it has become a massive deal for cheerleaders. Cheerleading became an Olympic sport in 2021. The International Olympic Committee granted the International Cheer Union full recognition on July 20, 2021. Cheerleading is included as a Recognized Federation and is eligible for future Olympic Games. Olympic cheerleading will be the toughest level of competition, it is where you go after worlds, which is super cool seeing all these teams up against each other.
