Technological developments affected the roles of women and the perceptions of womanhood greatly in the mid-1800s. The role of women was very limited even before the mid- 1800s but during the early years women were income producers and worked at home. They were not forced to live a certain life but were given limits. Due to technological advances women were no longer income produces but forced into the role of motherhood which was known as the “Cult of Domesticity”. Women were encouraged to stay home and raise children and introduce moral values. They had “separate spheres” from their husbands. During this time, the Lowell system was created to help protect women working in factories. It gave them good working conditions and boarding houses. This did not last because as technological development grew so did the competitions forcing the Lowell system to decline. This brought women out of fair working conditions to harsh conditions and little pay. Those who had to work were no longer able to work at home but had to go outside of their homes thanks to the technological developments which moved production outside of the household. Many of these women were ridiculed and were forced into a difficult and even traumatizing transitions from farm life to harsh and lonely factory life. As the technological development grew so did the harsh working environment. The life of these factory women was far worse than before.
