“The Affect of Texting”
The favorable broadcast is that today’s teenagers are devoted readers and rich writers. The unfavorable broadcast is that what they are reading and writing are text messages; Text messages that destroys the mind of an immature teenager, or even adult. It started as a useful communication tool being used between friends and writing in what is known as ‘secret code’. Now, the fears of a decline in our literacy have become more prominent, and a lot of the blame has been blamed on texting. Texting refers to the ridiculous use of abbreviations, as well as other techniques to craft short message service and instant messages. This does not always follow the standard rules and regulations of English grammar, nor usual word spellings. It is so inescapable that some look at is as a developing language in its own right. “In one American study, less than 20% of the text messages looked at showed abbreviated forms of any kind - about three per message. And in a Norwegian study, the proportion was even lower, with just 6% using abbreviations. In my own text collection, the figure is about 10%.” Teenagers use text messaging so much, that their minds somehow began to think that’s the proper use of the English language. The most noticeable use of text abbreviation would be in numerical style. For example, using the number 4 for “for” and the number 2 for “to” or “too” Also the use of initials: n for “in”, btw for “by the way” or omw for “on my way”. These are all examples of how we shorten our texted. Reasons we do this is to text for proficiently, or to even fit in with our peers, who are also using text abbreviation. “The need to save time and energy is by no means the whole story of texting” Texting saves of time on spelling out ridiculously long
