How does the art of the Renaissance demonstrate a ‘rebirth’? Analyse two to four artworks in-depth to support your argument. The Renaissance produced some of the greatest artists of all time, whom created some of the most famous and influential artworks known to mankind. This essay will argue that the Renaissance period demonstrated a rebirth of classicism. This is argued by analysing the works of Sandro Botticelli, whose La Primavera represents the rebirth of nature and life (Barolsky 2000). Raphael, whose brushwork in The School of Athens symbolises the rebirth of ancient philosophers (Most, 1996). And lastly, Donatello’s bronze statue of David demonstrating the rebirth of naturalism (Janson, 2018). The Renaissance was brought forward by humanists who claim that to attain human excellence, one must directly study the literature, art and civilisation of classical Greece and Rome (Burke 1989, pg. 12). Humanists further exclaimed that the Renaissance was to be a complete re-run of the classical period (Burke 1989, pg.14). During this time artists emerged recapturing this classical period through sculpture, architecture and painting. Unbeknownst to them, centuries later these artworks would be studied around the world and remembered for their artistic
