Shakespeare did an excellent job on showing how a character, who the readers know little about, affects the outcome of this tragedy. The first time the audience is introduced to King Hamlet’s ghost is while guards, Barnardo and Marcellus, are on watch in Act I Scene I. The Ghost speaks to neither of them so the next night they bring Prince Hamlet in hope that the Ghost will speak to him. This is where the problem begins. The Ghost says to Hamlet, “A serpent stung me. So the whole ear of Denmark is by a forgèd process of my death rankly abused. But know, thou noble youth, the serpent that did sting thy father’s life now wears his crown” (Shakespeare 24). The Ghost is telling Hamlet that the reason behind his death is because of Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, poisoned him to become the king of Denmark and that his spirit can’t rest until revenge is taken.
