The entire reason for this party was to defend the king and all those close to him from it, but there is no escaping the disease. The text states, “His vesture-was dabbed in blood-and his brow, with all the features with all the feature of a face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror” Poe, 425). The Red Death was a “walking corpse” looking figure that appeared out of nowhere during the course of the party; and how instantly makes his way toward the block room. All those who attended the shindig secretly feared the moving figure as it made its way to the room. The king did not stand for this so he planned to kill the figure, but yet the figure killed him.

On the other hand, even though Prince Prospero tried his best to escape the horrible reality of the plague, in the end he died because of it. He failed to realize that the Read Death had entered his castle in the form of the masked figure. The masked figure clearly represented Death. The figure was “tall and gaunt,” wore “habiliments of the grave,” and had the “countenance of a stiffened corpse.” The “black velvet room” also hinted the presence of a mystery figure that would bring nothing but misfortune.

In “The Masque of the Red Death”, Poe uses the symbols of the hallway, the rooms, and the braziers, to enhance the allegory, and to show how death is inevitable and one can not spend their life worrying about it.

She decided one day that she had conquered death by changing her fate and goes to venture the town where she met a strange man, who insults her, filled with anger she decides to go after him where she faces death. Edgar Allan Poe who wrote The Masque of the Red Death is a master at creating imagery. He wants a certain mood and image in the minds of his readers and does everything he can to put it there. The mood of this story is dark and threatening, Poe developes this mood by adding very detailed descriptions, characters, and experiences to the plot. “He had come like a thief in the night” (14) is one of the descriptions that sticks out the most. Out of all of his writings, there is no sense quite as creepy as the one this sentence implies.

In the 18th century, Romantic and Gothic writers used many literary elements to make their works more meaningful. These included figurative language, symbolism, imagery, allusions, mood and tone to enhance the theme in their stories. Two men who did this were the Gothic writer Edgar Allan Poe, and the Gothic romance writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. The works “The Masque of the Red Death” by Poe, and “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Hawthorne, are examples of using literary elements to enhance theme.
“It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night.” This is said by the narrator in “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Once evil enters the mind and is welcomed and given permission to rule, it will control and direct one's actions. The theme in both “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Masque Of Red Death” is death, whether it be intentional by humans or inevitable because of mortality. The similarities and differences in these stories are they both have death that kills innocent people, one story is more realistic and the other symbolizes death, and lastly both stories have people imagining something.

Poe hides underlying messages throughout the story, leaving the reader to interpret the true meaning of prosperity and death. Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism and imagery in the form of an allegory to reveal to the reader that death is inescapable, no matter how wealthy you are.

The illusion of death has wondered and astonished many for years. This doesn 't exclude the fantastic author Shakespeare. Throughout the play, Shakespeare focuses on death and how society glorifies it. He often uses metaphor and analogy in order to make death seem more welcoming. Turmoil and confusion can internally destroy any country.
